Mobile Crane Operator/Specific Crane Training (All Types)

Target Group
Potential crane operators. Delegates must be over the age of 18, be physically fit, have good eyesight, hearing ability and be able to judge distances.

Aim
The aim of this training course is to train selected delegates in the safe operation and use of mobile cranes in their workplace.

• Operate the crane safely in accordance with manufacturers handbook and accepted codes of practice.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the concepts set out in Company, National and International standards
• Demonstrate an understanding of the controls of the particular model used during the training.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the proper use of lifting tackle.
• Estimate the weight of loads.
• Use appropriate communications.

• Pre-course examination to assess candidate level of competency
• Legislation. Company, local, British, National and International standards as appropriate, manual handling operations mandatory etc. Permit to work system (If appropriate).
• Machine selection, crane configuration and equipment requirements. Identification, load rating information, guards and protective structures, cabs and control stations, operating controls, drum assemblies, brakes, ropes, rigging reeving and accessories, sheaves, outriggers, power controlled lowering, Boom stops, Safety features, equipment handbook and records.
• Machine assembly and set up on all areas/surfaces. Crane maintenance. Routine, daily, vicinity and pre-start checks. Wire ropes and cables. Information and inspection requirements. Fire and gas detection equipment. Boom Inspection procedures.
• The Banksman/Slinger and his duties Banksman/Slinger requirements, Job discussion ('Toolbox talk'), hand signals/radio work, crane operations, and blind lifts. Safe rigging and lifting Instruction, video and question paper, theoretical background explanation of the requirements for good operational practice and effects of misuse.
• Crane function test/operation. Data logging systems, emergency stops/lowering systems, gross overload protection systems and procedures, slack rope cut-out etc. Emergency operating procedures Safety devices and RCI (Rated Capacity Indicators) systems (as appropriate)
• General Maintenance Brief details to enhance driver/operator knowledge includes; Hydraulic systems, Pressure accumulators, electrical systems, brake assemblies, centralised grease points, inspection of load monitoring slew points, oil/air filters, lubrication and oil types, weekly maintenance requirements and job cards.
• Adverse weather operation. Weather information, determination of wind speed, crane operation in darkness, lights and impaired vision, poor visibility operations company policy, driver/operator Banksmen/Slinger radio controlled operations.

Achievement Measurement
Following the theoretical elements of this training course, a further period, determined by the level of candidates competency, is spent in a fully 'hands on' operating role. During this period the instructor will assess the delegates general aptitude and confidence. He will be observed in the undertaking of pre-use, daily, weekly, and monthly checks and inspections, and assessed for all round performance with particular attention being paid to safe operation of the crane.  Certificates will be issued on successful completion.
