    CITB CPCS A02 Crawler Crane Training

    Specialised Plant and Machinery Operations
    It is important that the instructors/trainers/assessors read all the information provided in the Guidance Notes prior to commencing any instruction, training and/or assessment.

    Training Outcomes
    A module credit will be awarded to the candidate for the successful completion of this module. Instruction, training and/or assessment of mandatory modules MOD 1 and MOD 2 must be undertaken and the CITB Health and Safety Test must be successfully completed (after appropriate training) for the issue of the Specialised Plant and Machinery Operations Intermediate Certificate for Crawler Crane.

    CITB A02 Crawler Crane Training
    To successfully complete this module, the trainee with a crawler crane must be able to:

    • Identify the basic construction, purpose and function of components and the purpose and use of all controls and gauges.
    • Identify and comply with manufacturers’ instructions in accordance with the operator’s handbook, other information sources and applicable legislation.
    • Carry out all pre-use and running checks.
    • Configure the crawler crane for travel.
    • Explain all relevant documentation.
    • Set the Rated Capacity Indicator and/or Load Radius Indicator.
    • Manoeuvre the crane in confined areas.
    • Set up the crane in order to lift various loads.
    • Lift, move and place loads from minimum to maximum radius using full slewing capabilities. of the machine.
    • Recognise and respond to given signals and instructions.
    • Travel with suspended loads.
    • Place loads accurately.
    • Control load swings.
    • Change the number of falls of rope on a hook block (above 10 tonne machine only).
    • Explain precautions to be taken for overhead services and other hazards.
    • Keep within safe working parameters.
    • Place in an out-of-service condition.
    • Explain loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter.
    • Explain rigging and de-rigging procedures when fitting a lattice type extension or fly jib
      (above 10 tonne machine only).

    Training Syllabus
    It is recommended that mandatory modules MOD 1 and MOD 2 be completed before delivery of this module. As stated in the Guidance Notes, instructors/trainers/assessors are encouraged to integrate subjects from each module in the development of programmes for candidates with little
    or no experience.

    4. Dealing with hazards.
    5. Accident prevention and control.
    6. Selection and use of personal protective equipment.
    7. Handling plant-related harmful substances.
    8. Trained Operator Achievement Test.
      Current legislation, Approved Codes of Practice and Government body guidance.

    Crawler Crane:

    1. Basic construction, names of components and the purpose and use of all controls and gauges.
    2. Use of the operator’s handbook, other information sources, Approved Codes of Practice and legislative documents.
    3. Pre-use and running checks.
    4. Configuring the crawler crane for travel.
    5. Operator documentation, test and thorough examination certificates, method statements, lift plans, duties
    charts etc.
    6. Using the Rated Capacity Indicator.
    7. Manoeuvring the crane, progressing to manoeuvring in confined areas.
    8. Crane configurations and set up.
    9. Lifting accessories.
    10. Lifting loads and placing loads accurately.
    11. Responding to signals and instructions.
    12. Travelling with suspended loads (pick and carry only).
    13. Controlling load swings.
    14. Changing the number of falls of rope on a hook block and terminal fittings.
    15. Precautions and actions for overhead services and other hazards.
    16. How to stay within safe working parameters.
    17. Placing the crane in an out-of-service condition.
    18. Loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter.
    19. Rigging and de-rigging procedures for the lattice type extension or fly jib.
